It can be hard to choose the right after-school activity for your teenager. It’s essential for them to enjoy the activity, but you also want to keep them safe and help them stay on track to long-term success and fulfillment. Below, KB Books Presents discusses some of the best after-school activities for teens (hint: all of them are fun and beneficial!).
Recreational Sports
Playing a sport is an excellent way for teenagers to stay active and socialize with their peers. It can also teach them essential life skills like leadership, teamwork, and communication. Your child has many different sports to choose from (e.g., basketball, skateboarding, racquetball, etc.), so there has to be one that they’re interested in! Participating in sports can also help teens relieve stress, build self-confidence, and improve their academic performance.
Starting a Business
For entrepreneurial teens, starting a business might be the ideal after-school activity. It will teach them valuable business skills while giving them a sense of responsibility and accomplishment. It’s easier than ever to start an online business with today’s technology. If your child expresses an interest in launching and running a company, help them research different ideas and create an action plan.
Maybe your teenager can build a business around the dropship model, which would mean that you won’t have to worry about keeping a physical inventory in your house! Or, perhaps they would rather sell handmade jewelry or provide a local service (e.g., landscaping, home repair, babysitting, etc.). Whatever your child chooses to do, make sure they lay a firm foundation for their business. Here are a few tasks to help them with:
● Writing a detailed business plan
● Creating a brand identity
● Building a professional website
● Choosing marketing channels and tactics to promote their brand
● Researching tech tools that can help along the way
You’ll also need to help your team designate a legal structure for their company. Many young entrepreneurs benefit from forming LLCs because this type of entity is low-risk and offers several tax advantages. You can easily find a registered agent online!
Volunteering
Volunteering provides a platform for teenagers to give back to their community and learn about various causes firsthand. It can also help them develop empathy and compassion for others. Volunteering opportunities abound, so there’s sure to be one that matches your teen’s interests. Check with your local library, hospital, or community center to see the opportunities available in your area.
Special Interest Club
Does your team have a special interest or hobby they’re passionate about (e.g., reading novels, sewing, Lego building, etc.)? There might be an after-school club that caters to those interests.
Joining a club related to their interests can help teens make new friends who have the same passion. It can also go a long way in building confidence and teaching them to self-reflect. Help your team find a local club they can be excited about; you might find helpful information at their school or via social media platforms like Facebook.
Performing Arts
If you want to give your teenager the opportunity to express themselves creatively, encourage them to join a performance arts group. Theater, dance, and music can help teens build confidence, reduce stress, and make like-minded friends. Most cities have various performing arts groups that meet weekly, and joining such a group will allow your teen to get involved in their community and explore their inner creativity.
Conclusion
Your teenager has a plethora of after-school activities to choose from. The key is to help them brainstorm ideas and identify an activity that meets their interests and needs. Ultimately, you want them to have fun while learning important life skills that can benefit them in their adult life. Don’t stop here—keep looking for unique activities that can benefit your child!
